Autumn Room Sprays using essential oils

Well, it's official...Autumn is on it's way and the stores are filled with the cutest fall décor. One of the things all the stores are stocked up on right now is anything that smells like apples, pumpkin spice and bonfires. I was picking up new pumpkin shaped jars to make my MYO Autumn gel air fresheners and I decided to make some essential oils room sprays while I was at it!

Ya'll know how much I prefer EOs to store bought chemical fragrances and room freshening sprays are no different! I grabbed some small spray bottles to use for these room sprays and started working on scent combinations. I'm pretty sure I can come up with more fall scents than a candle store!

Actually, did you know that I used to work in a candle store, and yes...I made scent blends! But seriously, I would like to know who is in charge of the bonfire and falling leaves scents they sell in those fancy candle lines because those things are way off! lol Sorry, I digress...

Making your own air fresheners is super easy and it's so much better for your health to use these in your home than store bought sprays that are packed with tons of chemicals! I mean, do you really know what all those things on the ingredient list are? It's kinda scary when you think about it.

Autumn Room Spray recipes

I have 2 different ways I like to make my own air fresheners. Sprays and solids. They all start with essential oils blends. Once you have a recipe you like, use them with all your DIY products or just add the blend to a diffuser so that it smells just like fall in your home every day.

Essential Oil Scents for the Fall

If you are a big fan of essential oils, fall is a great time to incorporate them more into your life. The following list includes individual essential oils that are perfect for this season, and also some ideas for blending them together into unique scents that are perfect for this cozy time of year.

Individual Autumn Scents

The first thing you should do if you want to start using fall scents is to figure out which essential oils are going to achieve this. You have two main options: go with individual scents or choose a blend.

Many of the popular essential oil companies mix blends for you, where they will smell like a forest, fall air, cinnamon, or pumpkin spice. However, if you don’t want to go this direction, you can instead use those individual scents. Here are some that are perfect for fall:

  • Cinnamon
  • Cassia
  • Sweet orange
  • Fir
  • Nutmeg
  • Eucalyptus
  • Clove
  • Vanilla absolute
  • Tea Tree
  • Cypress
  • Rosemary
  • Peppermint
  • Pine
  • Frankincense
  • Bergamot

Autumn Essential Oil Blends

The other option is to use a blend. You can buy premade blends or you can mix up your own blend depending on how you want the specific essential oil product to smell. Start experimenting with different combinations until you figure out what you like best.

Work with small amounts till you're sure you love a recipe. Then mix up a batch to keep on hand.

When making your own blends, the stronger scents like fir and eucalyptus should be used less, and the milder scents like orange and vanilla can be used more. Basically, blending 1 drop of eucalyptus and 1 drop of orange will smell mostly like eucalyptus. You'll need to double or even triple the orange to be able to smell it in the blend.

Here are some different scent combinations I use:

Pumpkin Spice

The big bad secret about pumpkin spice is that there is no actual pumpkin in it! lol For a pumpkin spice blend, try combing equal amounts of clove oil with nutmeg and cinnamon. This is a very basic blend of scents that tend to smell just like pumpkin spice.

Autumn Air

For a blend that smells like those warm fall evening walks outdoors, try fir or eucalyptus with sweet orange and your choice of spices, like either nutmeg or clove.

Autumn Spice

Another spice combination is more heavily spiced with some sweetness added to the mix. Use equal amounts cinnamon oil and clove plus slightly more vanilla, and some sweet orange or lemon.

Turning essential oils into room sprays

Fall is the perfect time to bring out all your essential oils, combine the ones that smell like the Autumn season, and make room sprays! Room sprays not only deodorize the room, but you get that smell of leaves, baked goods, and spices even without actually baking anything.

My basic recipe for room sprays is 1/4 cup witch hazel &1/4 cup distilled water. About 80 drops of essential oils. Put in spray bottle and shake to mix before using. This make a very large spray bottle!

What I like to do is mix the first two ingredients and then divide it between 2 ounce bottles. Add essential oils per bottle. It breaks down to 10 drops of EO per 1 ounce of mixture, so adjust accordingly if you have 3 or 4 ounce bottles. By making smaller bottles, you can make them all different scents!

Here are some different room spray recipes using essential oil blends.

Vanilla Room Spray:

This first room spray is going to smell of vanilla spice, with some other Autumn-like scents added in there. 3 parts vanilla absolute or extract, 1 part cinnamon oil, 1 part clove oil, and 2 parts orange oil.

Fall Harvest Spray:

If you want more of that classic fall scent, this harvest room spray is going to be ideal. 1 part clove essential oil, 1 part cassia essential oil, and 3 parts orange or tangerine oil.

Forest Room Spray:

This next fall scented room spray is going to use more woodsy scents. Two parts white fir essential oil, two parts orange essential oil and one part of either cassia or eucalyptus essential oil.

Pumpkin Room Spray:

While there isn’t pumpkin essential oil, you can often get a pumpkin spice oil blend from many of the big essential oil companies. They pre-mix the different scents for you, so all you need is that one bottle. Or you can make your own with scents using equal parts clove, ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom. This will be a very spicy blend! To mellow it out a bit add a few parts vanilla or orange essential oil.

You'll notice I said parts and not drops. As mentioned earlier you'll want about 10 drops per ounce of water/witch  hazel mix...so you'll adjust the amount of drops to the amount of liquid.

Not into fall scent? Check out these Essential oils that can reduce stress. They would make a great room spray, don't you think?

Don't forget to label your essential oil blends! It's so easy to get confused when they're all in similar bottles. Ask me how I know this! LOL Happy blending!
